- Description: Logo for a family owned Software company.
- Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I used Adobe Illustrator to create all of the logos. To create the mountain and canyon effect I used the triangle shape tool and then altered the anchor points to make the shapes fit. I downloaded a font from dafont.com so that I didn’t use any overused fonts. I took the colors straight from the color wheel to make the correct color scheme.
- Message: The message a wanted to create is simple. I want clients or any potential client to be able to recognize the abstract mountain range and be able to read the company name clearly and know what it is and what the company can provide them.
- Audience: Government workers and other state county members that are looking into a new software database.
- Top Thing Learned: I always learn so much with these projects. I learned how to use the tools on Adobe Illustrator and although I am still perfecting it, I have gotten a hang of most things. I learned that I really enjoy illustrator because it’s concept is very simple. I learned what the difference between pixels and vectors are. I also learned that the right color scheme can make a project really stand out when a bad color scheme can totally ruin the branding for a company.
- Color Scheme and Color Names: Analogous Color Scheme: Red, Brick, Orange

Project 4 Montage
- Description: Photo montage using layer masking techniques to portray a spiritual theme.
- Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing): I used Photoshop to create the different layering effect. Masking, quick selection, sharpening, level and vibrance change, color altering, filters, outside font downloaded from dafont.com, combination of four different pictures to create one image.
- Message: Although life can be stormy and rocky at some points, Our Heavenly Father is always there to shine through the darkness. If we know that God is our Heavenly Father, we will avoid a lot of sadness in our lives and will like a calm and happy life.
- Audience: Christian Faith, Youth, Adults
- Top Thing Learned: I learned how to mask images. My first draft had some hard edges but I was able to soften them all to make it look more like a montage. I brought out a little of the original image into every aspect of the whole picture. I learned how to move specific objects with their rasterization. I also learned how a simple image can bring the spirit so strongly with it’s Typography. It really portrays the message well when effective Typography is used.
- Filter / Colorization used and where it was applied: Ripple filter was added to the sunset.
- Color scheme and color names: The Color Scheme is complimentary. There is a Teal ocean with it’s contrasting brick and orange lettering with an orange sunset as well as orange on the sail boat.

Project 3 Photodesign

- Description: Photodesign project demonstrating Light, Focus and Composition.
- Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I used Photoshop to edit the vibrance , sharpen the picture, erase blemishes and unwanted objects, and played with the burn and dodge tools. The colors were added to created the split complimentary color scheme.
- Message: The message is to all to portray the importance of showing your true beauty. I love close up photos because it captures the beautiful features of the face. The eyes were what gave me the idea for the color scheme. Her lipstick was bright already but I used tools to make it a darker red. Be your kind of beautiful.
- Audience: Woman of all ages, specifically college aged.
- Top Thing Learned: I learned so much. Photoshop is difficult and it was very frustrating at first. I thought that it would be a lot more like InDesign but it wasn’t too similar. It took me a while to figure out how to navigate my way around the software but I learned so much about the different tools. It took a lot of mistakes to perfect certain things. I am excited however to learn more and more with each project. I learned the importance of making new layers, the importance of the correct vibrance and also not sharpening images too much. It makes things so much better when the photo is good quality to start out with as well.
- Color scheme and color names: Color names are teal red and gold and together they make a split complimentary color scheme.

Light 1- Outside
Light 2 – Inside
Focus 1 – Foreground
Focus 2 – Background
Composition 1 – Thirds
Composition 2 – Lead Room
I really enjoyed using my camera and playing around with all of the different options. I used a Canon EOS RebelT3 to capture these shots. I really enjoyed working with the natural light during the afternoon. I shot in various locations around the BYU-I campus. Taking these pictures opened up my eyes to all of the possibilities in photography. I believe that after this project I will be looking for rule of thirds and natural lighting everywhere. I enjoy fine photography and hope one day to become an expert. For now, I’ll keep polishing the basics.
Although the scenery and subjects in the pictures were gorgeous, I edited each picture with Adobe Photoshop. I used basic editing skills such as resizing, adjusting levels and vibrance, selective coloring touch ups, sharpening and editing out unneeded objects. This being one of my first times using Photoshop it was a little difficult at first but I was able to figure it out pretty fast. I am really looking forward to working with it with other projects because there are so many things that can be done to make a picture look that much better. I also touched up a Jamie’s teeth a little bit with the lasso tool and the curve tool. I used a different layer and group and the curve tool to make them whiter. Overall it was a great experience and I am enjoying photography a lot.
Project 2 Event Ad
Description: Event Ad representing an imaginary shoe collection for the soles 4 souls non-profit organization.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): This Ad was created in Microsoft Word using a scanned image. And then text and design was added. Color matching and correct alignment were used. Close attention to detail and appropriate white space and typography.
Message: The message is meant to portray an autumn theme for the month of October and to draw the audience’s attention. Everyone has a pair of shoes that they aren’t using and the message helps remind people that someone else is in need. The event will also have activities so that the donators are happy as well that they would leave with a feeling of providing service to someone in need.
Audience: Families and Students in Rexburg, Idaho and surrounding areas.
Color scheme and color names: An analogous color scheme was used with the Brick Red, Burnt Orange and Gold to match the picture as well as the white text brought out the color of the shoes.
Top Thing Learned: I learned that Microsoft Word has a lot more design features than I thought. I learned a lot about how to effectively scan a picture. The first few times were very blurry but in the end a high quality picture was produced from a simple scan.
Title Font Name & Category: Impact- San Serif
Copy Font Name & Category: Bookman Old Style- Old Style
Scanned images used, sources, and original sizes, location of scanner used: Image was printed out from http://www.unsplash.com to a 4 x 3 photo and then scanned from the scanner in the BYU-Idaho Spori lab.
Project 1 Flier
Description: Project number one in COMM130 visual media. I was given the text, photo and logo and was asked to create a flier for the event using only black and white colors in Adobe InDesign.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): Adobe InDesign and Photoshop were used to create this flier. The Vouant Communication logo was black to begin with but I brought it into Photoshop to invert the colors for a nice gestalt look on top of the black bar. I brought this feel into the design of the heading. I created a black circle and brought the letter “G” into it and made it black for a dramatic eye catching effect.
Message: The message is concise and short so that it can be read fast. Attracting college aged students is sometimes difficult but this is exactly what they need to be informed and to not feel overwhelmed at the same time.
Audience: The audience is all college graduates. I wanted to create something simple and easy to ready yet eye catching. College students do not have a lot of free time to read so, I wanted all of the key points to be easily visible.
Top Thing Learned: I learned how much time goes into creating an image or any piece of design. It takes creativity as well as time and an eye for perfectionism. I made sure to align all of the objects included with something else in the flier. I learned a new skill in photoshop. I also learned an effective way to draw attention through simple black and white.
Title Font Name & Category: The title was News Gothic MT an example of sans serif.
Copy Font Name & Category: The body font was Garamond an example of Oldstyle.
