Tutorial

Process: This is a sharpening in Photoshop tutorial. There are many other ways that one can sharpen using photoshop but these are the most common that I use. It is very relevant for this class because we spend a lot of time taking pictures and editing them. This is a beginners tutorial that can help anyone perfect their sharpening skills. I was inspired to do a tutorial on this topic because of the simplicity of it as well as my need to perfect my skills in photoshop as well. The picture of St. Paul’s Cathedral was taken this summer in London, England and the picture of my friend Jami was taken last semester in front of the bookstore.

I had a lot of fun shooting these pictures. I wasn’t pleased with how the deep depth photos turned out because I didn’t have a very good light source and I just placed the camera on a table but I think it was still a little wobbly. But I learn from my mistake. I sharpened a couple of the photos, messed with the vibrance and the levels as well. I was surprised when I used the 50mm how much more blur I could get because the aperture opened so much wider. Fun project! I am excited to continue.

Blog 3 LIGHT – Motion: Freeze and Blur

  1. Flowing Water 2. January 18, 2016 apartment room 3. Focal Length: 21.00 mm 4. F/stop = F 4/0 5. Shutter Speed 1/1300 6. Canon EOS REBEL T3. Hand held with side lighting

Edits- Vibrance, levels, black and white layer with accent on yellow.: A jar was placed on a chair that was covered with a blanket and I had my roommate pour water into it as I shot pictures. There was a side light as well as an open window.

Freeze Shot

  1. House of Cards 2. January 19, 2016 10:30 pm, apartment kitchen 3. Focal Length 21.00 mm 4. F/stop= 7.1 5. Shutter Speed 1/800 6. Canon EOS REBEL T3. Hand held with side lighting

Editing- Color balance layer, sharpen, exposure and layering edit: A lamp was set on the side of the house of cards and a penny was dropped on top of it to catch it falling as well as the cards falling. It was so hard to get the lighting right but I am starting to get the hang of it.

Blur-Panning

  1. Fast Car 2. January 19, 2016 4:00, outside of the Spori building 3. Focal Length 21.00 mm 4. F/stop f/10  5. Shutter Speed 1/30 6. Canon EOS REBEL T3  hand held

Edits- exposure, vibrance, levels and slight sharpening: Taking a moving picture seemed a lot harder that it was. I was excited to learn how to take this picture and now want to try it in different situations to get more creative. I stood by the street and followed the car through the panning technique.

Blur- Light Painting

  1. Beautiful People 2. January 19, 2016, 10:00 pm apartment living room 3. Focal Length 21.00 mm 4. F/stop f/14 5. Shutter Speed 12 seconds 6. Canon EOS REBEL T3, camera set on apartment countertop

Edits: levels and vibrance: It took me a while to get this affect and it took a lot of people to push the button, turn off the light and move the colored lights around. It was a big learning experience.

Photobook Design

Three months ago I traveled to Jackson, Wyoming and had the wonderful opportunity to take pictures there. I used my Canon Rebel T3i while there and tried to capture as many shots as possible on a cold foggy day. I love taking pictures of the outdoors and more than anything of places that I visit. I brought all of the pictures into Photoshop for post editing but I only changed the levels and the vibrance as well as sharpened a few things in the photos. I wanted a simple layout because that is my style. I like that all of the focus is on the pictures and with the black background I think it showcased the pictures very well. I hope to inspire people to go and visit the many places I have been by capturing great photos.

Past Photos

Kendall   Hi Everyone! My name is Kendall Barrett and I am a Junior at BYU-Idaho. I’m from Chandler, Arizona. I love food, design, traveling, fashion and being active outdoors.  I am fascinated by photography but I am not the most experienced person out there. I love taking pictures of the places I visit, landscapes and food. I look forward to getting more experience with portraits this semester. I have taken COMM 130 so that is the extent of my actual experience but I have been snapping pictures all of my life and for the past few years with a Canon EOS Rebel T3i.
This is my second semester as a communication major because after my mission in Argentina, I transferred to Idaho from Arizona State University where I was a Nutrition major. I also study Spanish and want to perfect the language over my lifetime. I love to learn.
The edits I have added to these photos are subtle saturation changes and sharpening. I try my hardest to get the best pictures as possible from the beginning but I know that they can be better. I am looking forward to learning  a lot about photography andthe post processing as well.
